Hey people. I could use some wise words
I'm thinking about getting a new job. It's got to be IT related because that's what I enjoy. I like the idea of IT consultancy for small businesses (although I'm not limiting myself to that).
I could do with finding out what my clients needs would be - what my target market could be and what I could specialise in (my Unique Selling Point ).
If anyone has any ideas or knows any good starting points / resources for finding this stuff out I'd be very grateful.

This, in my opinion, completely depends on what you're good at. There's no point in trying to specialise in Vista related consultancy if you use some flavour of Linux all day. Figure out your skills and then go seek your clients with that knowledge in hand. Although having a good grasp of all the basics of IT is essential, being highly skilled in one area will be of more benefit.
Just my opinions!

Thanks Andrew. You pretty much hit the nail on the head there - I have a broad range of IT skills at the moment, which is great, but having something I specialise in and that people need will set me apart from everyone else. I just need to figure out what that is.
Someone else I asked said I was looking for the Holy Grail. I don't think they were far wrong |

No problem. If you're in the position of being able to choose your speciality then you're in a good place right now. Some people become experts in fields they have little interest in due to the pressure from above. Being able to choose is a definite perk even if it doesn't seem so now!
It might be worth reading what the future holds in IT and becoming an expert in those emerging technologies/markets (the upcoming SSD revolution for example). Business will always look to an expert to help them convert from old to new.

Are there any good websites/magazines you would recommend for this kind of information? |
