Hi

I am hoping there is a solution to this problem.

I am an ICT teacher and would like my pupils to be able to administer a MySQL database using MySQL administrator. This isnt a problem from home (I know I will have to add their IP address to the allowed list) but at school we have a firewall which blocks the required port.

CPanel doesnt work normally from school but I have installed CPanel proxy which works perfectly. I realise I can get them to do the administration from here but would prefer to use MySQL administrator because of its superior GUI and similarity to Access whcih they already have experience of.

Is there any way to do this. I have investicated SSL port tunnelling using Putty but this didnt work.

Thank you

Hi,

Without SSH access I can see no way for this to be done. We don't offer SSH access I'm afraid.

Thanks,

Andrew

Following my previous post I have now managed to use SQLyog, with its inbuilt http tunneling feature, to allow access to the MySQL database whilst behind the school's firewall.

Ideally I would like the same feature to allow me to use the free MySQL Administrator instead of the commercial SQLyog for financial reasons. Is there any opensource project that would satisfy my needs? I have looked up http tunneling but am not quite sure what I am looking for. What I would like is some standalone software that would allow any program to do the tunneling.

Would this be OK with nethosted if i can get it to work.

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi,

I can't see any problems with this myself if you can manage to get it working, but I'm afraid I do not have any experience in this area myself to be able to advise on how to achieve this!

Regards,

Darryl

You didn't specify which operating system you want the software for?

For Windows, you can use PuTTY to do tunnelling - you simply login then leave it running in the background, and other applications can then use the tunnel by connecting to the relevant local port.

For Unix, OpenSSH does similar things, although I've not used it.

I believe he's after HTTP tunnelling, not SSH tunnelling as we don't offer SSH access on shared servers for obvious reasons!

Darryl

Daryl's correct - I realise that SSH tunneling is out of the question and am looking at Http tunneling.

I have done some research on http-tunnel but it doesnt seem to work with the firewall and proxy server in place.

It looks as though I am stuck with SQLyog. I notice that MySQL Maestro also has http tunneling and this is also successful.

Incidentally can anyone tell me why I can't create a database with SQLyog. It gives the an access denied message. Is the only place you can create a database through cpanel. I am using the same username/password combination. Is it something to do with username@localhost being the only user with sufficient privileges. Is there any way to correct this?

Thank you

cPanel doesn't grant these permissions on remote access hosts.

Thanks,

Andrew

Jonathan, I am sure you must have considered this already, but isn't this a perfect job for one of those superceded 400 MHz boxes lying around? Plonk an older linux and mysql on it and hook it up to the network and you have all the access you need. In an educational environment I am surprised it is not taken care of by the IT guys anyway?

I had thought of using an older PC as a webserver and I may have to resort to doing just that. However I am really keen to give the pupils as much of a real world experience as I can. There is nothing like the feeling that your work could potentially be seen by the whole world!

An additional reason for wanting an external server is that publishing this way will help promote the school as well and allow parents to see what their children are doing.

The IT guys are rushed off their feet at the moment so I am doing the research on this issue for them. It is easier to present them with a solution (if any) to implement than be greeted with the standard "cant be !done" reply.

Thanks for everyone's comments

Jonathan
