| |
I am just planning a new build PC based around an Athlon 64 3000+ so I can be as future proof as possible but I can't make my mind up over the OS. What should I install ( I want to dual boot with SUSE 9.3 which is 64-bit capable).
*XP Home as the cheapest option and upgrade to Longhorn next year
*XP Pro and then go to Longhorn
*Try the XP-64bit trial download and then buy XP-64bit
*Bite the bullet and go for XP-64 now and then try to upgrade to Longhorn anyway
Cost wise, XP-64 is the same cost as XP-Pro and I think I can find drivers for everything. XP Home would save about £40. I want to set up a RAID 0 system for program files and data and have a seperate hard drive partitioned for the OS's. If I do this, how will my OS upgrade path affect data / programs on a different hard drive.
Problems, problems. Yes, i know I should choose a Mac, Andrew, but I can't build my own Mac yet. Its bad enough choosing a processor and motherboard combo, without trouble over an OS. |

XP Home and then upgrade to Longwait, cough-I-mean-Long-horn. If you're going to upgrade anyway why not go for the cheaper option.
Oor you could upgrade to Longhorn now with one of the many leaked versions which it would be almost impossible to find drivers for. That would be fun. |

yes, I used to work on Vista about 15 years ago or more, its a 4GL that used to sit on DEC Vax systems. Was very big in the publishing industry. Lets face it if Microsoft really want the name, no-one will stop them _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |

Vista was also a fractal-based terrain rendering-type program for the Amiga in the 90's that the amiga mags used to give away on the coverdisks Hours of endless fun sat watching it render scenes and export them to images, so you could then bolt the images together as an animated flyby of your map! |

I seem to recall that DEC had their own trademark problems with 'alpha', which was originally only used internally as the code name for their 64 bit microprocessor[1]. The name became so well known and widely used prior to release however that they decided to stick with it anyway. (There was also the small matter of a carpet cleaner manufacturer using the VAX name as well.)

Pete

Ian,
I've been considering putting a 64 bit system together myself for a little while - in my case I'd be using FC4 as the OS. Just out of curiosity which motherboard(s) are you looking at.
Regards,
Pete
PS Suggestions/comments from anyone who has already done this also appreciated. _________________ "I have made this letter long, only because I lacked the time to make it short." - Blaise Pascal 1657 |

I'm not a Mac zealot yet, I do look forward to seeing how OS X performs on better processors however. I actually run a bit of everything, although I use XP very little these days.
I don't know enough about the 64 bit revolution to give any sound advice I'm afraid
