Is it possible to grant access to awstats without handing over the username and password for the cPanel account?

But you can create a Cpanel profile for your user so that they only see the stats icon when they log in. Would that work?

Resellers can create feature lists which restrict what each/some sub-account's cPanel shows via WHM.

I'm not quite sure how this helps solve the original thread creators problem however.
