Partly out of my own interest and partly to help anyone who is unsure, I though it would be useful to detail a few back up strategies that people are using for different types of web site. If anyone is into Ecommerce, MySQL databases or forums in a big way, it would be interesting to see how you plan for a data loss nightmare.
PHP / CSS / HTML static site - Updates about weekly
I have all my files in a working directory on my laptop where I can view them on my own web server as a test bed. I have a backup on the same hard drive but different partition and a seperate CD-R back up kept off site. These back ups are only made when I change the site (about weekly). I always have 3 copies of anything on my site.

Keeping data on a different partion on the same drive is pretty worthless as a backup.
CD-R backups every time you change the site of the site itself and weekly backups of any databases you may find stored offiste in a fire-proof safe are the best bet - the only way you'll get into those is with the key and a tank. _________________ | Mark

OK, this wont help if you have a drive failure and definately shouldn't be relied on. However, it does help if you have a corrupted OS and have to do a fresh reinstall of windows. If your data is on a different partition then it should be left alone. This has happened to me in the last 6 months and although I had backups on CD-R, it did take longer to do the restore.

Most people can keep a couple of CD-R's at home, work, at a relatives or even in the car. You would have to be unlucky if both your primary data, web server and your back-up building all got burnt or burgled on the same night. You still have to remember to replace the backup pretty quick if it does happen. |
