Ok, I just have to ask this now: I find myself usually updating my site late at night, and every single time I did this in the last weeks, sooner or later the connection breaks and the server seems to be gone. Rebooting, or as some posts here suggest my IP gets blocked for whatever reason. When it happens, both FTP and normal HTTP access to the site is gone. Having this always in the middle of a larger upload is rather unconveniant. :-/
So, I'd really like to know whether I just have the bad luck to always hit the nightly scheduled downtime or if somehow my FTP program is actually causing this?! The domain is saucers-and-dragons.co.uk, time of the outage was from about 1.10 to 1.17, I guess. The server is Mars, as far as I know. |

Hi,
Mars is currently backing up every account. This does cause additional load on the server but nothing that would stop FTP for any length of time. I've looked over the FTP logs and our server received no data from you between 00:54 and 01:09 and therefore disconnected you. I see you have connected back in and are uploading without issue.
This is the only timeout we have from you in our logs (since 7th September).
I see you are on NTL. We've had customers experience random timeouts on NTL before:
http://community.nethosted.co.uk/possible-ntlvirgin-media-problem-t2011.html
None of our other customers on different ISPs experience this and our server is definitely up when some NTL customers have these problems. Please note NTL customers have experienced these random timeouts with servers running different software versions/packages in different datacentres therefore this issue does appear to be on NTL's side.
Thanks,

Thanks for the information! I can absolutely imagine this to be a Virgin problem somehow. Although I have to say that I can reach other websites at the time my nethosted account is unavailable, so I didn't think of it as an ISP problem. Sorry for my not so nice tone last night. :-)
Anyway, as mentioned in the linked thread, I'll do a traceroute if that happens again. Which will probably be when WordPress 2.7 comes out in some weeks time. ;-) |

No problem!
Hopefully there'll be no problems with your WordPress upgrade!
Thanks,
