Hi All
I'm having a CSS rendering problem in Internet Explorer. The site works perfectly in Opera and Mozilla, but at soon as I open it in Internet explorer I get these odd white blocks in the main panel, particularly in the top left edge. The site validates OK as well.

i've had a good at changing different aspects of the code to no effect.
Anyone got any thoughts?
site is www.chris-pattison.co.uk
css is www.chris-pattison.co.uk/style.css

BTW I'm not responsible for the large tables on some of the pages, they have come from the website, I'm updating.
Thanks

I'm unable to replicate the problem... All the pages I tried in IE show exactly the same in Firefox.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The rendering problem has been random and not across all pages, so have a flick through the pages. I tested it on someones else's machine last night and got the same problem. We are both on NTL, which I wouldn't have thought was the cause ....

Hi Kev,

Just for confirmation I can see this happening as well in IE6 on Windows XP but not in FF 1.5. (I'm not on NTL.)

Out of interest, have you tried floating the .main_container?

Regards,

Pete

Here are some screenshots of the problem

I've never come across anything like it before and it's quite baffling.
I've run up a quick tabe based layout, which still need sorting, but the problem doesn't appear there

so I think problem arises from the way I've set up my floats and margins in the original.

Just a stab in the dark, but it's fixed problems similar to this for me before - try the holly hack on .menu_container:

/* Hides from IE5-mac \*/
* html .menu_container {height: 1%;}
/* End hide from IE5-mac */

As always - it might do nothing, it might make it worse, but it might fix it.

thanks UserFriendly, unfortunately your hack made no difference.
I've decided to ditch the pure css version of the website, and have gone back to tables, as I can't afford to have a mangled website anymore.
The css version of the website is now at
http://www.chris-pattison.co.uk/css/
Thank Bill Gates for not implementing standards properly again!

Ah well. Worth a try. It's just always the thing I try first for things like that (floats causing display problems).

You may already know about this site, but it's useful for working out what's causing css problems in IE:

http://www.positioniseverything.net/ie-primer.html

Some of the articles require you to pay to see them in full, but searching for the name of the bug is often rewarding.
