Someone I know has a domain registered with 123 Reg. The nameservers are set to 123 Reg, and they have a CNAME for www set to point to their website.

However, when the domain is accessed without the www prefix the 123 Reg holding page is shown. How do I sort this?

Thanks.

Hiya, thanks for the reply.

@ is set as an A record and is not pointing to their hosting server IP.

www is set as a CNAME record and points to a textual address.

If I change @ to the server IP, they can still set up MX records to use an email account elsewhere in future, right?

Hi,

I don't know about the MX (mail) record but I can't see why not as I believe the MX record is completely separate maybe someone else can confirm this.

It's definitely easier if you change the nameservers to ours. Anyone can manipulate the MX record for the domain via cPanel and Resellers can manipulate the whole zone to their liking. The benefit of using our nameservers is things like subdomains and addon domains will work straight away without them having to edit their 123-reg zone file after adding the subdomain via cPanel.

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks for the advice. The thing is, the site is hosted elsewhere (it's not a site I've done - I'm just helping them to get the non-www address to work).

So am I correct in thinking the first thing to do is to change the @ (A record) to the hosting server's IP address, whilst leaving the www CNAME as it is?

You can leave the www CNAME as is, you'd need to change the @ as that sounds like it's the main A record.

Remember caching might mean your changes don't show up immediately for you.

Thanks,

Andrew

Yes @ is used to define an A or CNAME record for the root of the domain - i.e. for domain.com itself without a leading www.  or anything. Usually this should be set up to be the same as the www record. Often it does not exist, which is why many websites need the leading www.  to work and just give you a "server not found" or similar message if it is omitted.
