I'm sure the rewards are worth it eventually, same as doctors. When my vet can charge £24.50 just to see the cat for 5 minutes then Dick Turpin springs to mind. Add any treatment to that as well. _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |

I haven't had any thoughts of suicide yet but a girl in my year at uni committed suicide a few years ago. Apart from farmers, vets have always been about the highest suicide rates in the UK, mainly because we have access to the drugs and tend to suceed. Doctors are high up in the lists as well (and they get divorced a lot also).
I think it is the on-call part of the job that causes most of the problems as it is stressful being tied to a phone ( I have had 1 week off-call in the last 21 months) and calls in the middle of the night are never easy when you have to work the following day.
The job has plenty of good points and I enjoy my work, meeting people and animals. The pay is decent although less than a doctor, solicitor or dentist with similar qualifications.
Z, you must be further south than me as most consult fees up here are less than £20. Vets do have high fixed costs with the building, staff and all the fancy equipment (anaesthetic machines, x-rays, autoclaves, ultrasound etc) and we have to keep up with our training.
Saying that, i do hear of some expensive prices being charged but that will be true of most professions. We try to offer value for money, I might charge you £25 but I want you to feel that you got your money's worth. You can get into a very long discussion about money and vets (I blame the NHS. No-one has any idea of how much medical treatment costs these days). At the end of the day, though, it is a free market and there is competition between vets. If a price is too high or you dont like the service, you are perfectly entitled to go somewhere else. Fortunately, most of my clients choose to stay with us (takes a lot of hard work from our part).
Ian -
PS My fellow yorkshiremen hanged Dick Turpin so we don't like his sorts up north!!
PPS Definately not suicidal tonight although if Leeds dont win the Superleague Grand Final next saturday I might be a bit depressed _________________ Hard to find and premium pet products at Pennine Vets |

agreed and I reckon the market is easier for them down here, less livestock on farms and more domesticated animals to look after. Doctors and vets are far more worthy than dentists though LOL _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |
