| |
Has anyone got any experiences of burning Dual Layer media ?
My drive has so far turned 6 blanks to coasters. There is no later firmware, as the supplier websites appear to have been shut down. The DL media is not cheap.
I have ordered some more media from Amazon, so I'll have some other brands to try.
The drive is an Artec and the media was purchased from ebay from a supplier i've used before.
Looking for recommendations of known good DL media. |

My only experience with burning is never do it too fast. That's the way I've turned blanks into coasters...

| i've got a lg dl burner too (about 20 quid off dabs, other retailers are available), never had any problems, it's usually the software mind. cyberlink stuff came with the comp and is suprisingly good. also use a very simple but not failed yet program called BurnOn CD&DVD. can't rememebr how i found that amongst the milllions that are out there, think was searching cnet. think media i've bought has been tesco own brand (expensive but there) and sony or verbatim off of amazon. |

Roxio Creator 9 is the software I used, but I had problems with IMGBurn as well.
Looks like I need to get a decent brand name drive. I think LG drives are on sale at PCWorld for £25, I'll give it a shot and change the drive, once I have tested the new media from Amazon.

Nice, although I need a beige or silver one, as none of my PC's are black, and it's for the PC connected to my TV.
Thanks for the link though ! |

For media I'd recommend e.g. Verbatim, especially for more bleeding edge stuff like DVD DL. For long-term/backup storage I'd stay away from cheapo media as they can degrade - I've had the odd cheapo CD-R die on me.
DVD-RAM is also worth looking at - turns your drive into a 4.5GB floppy. (As you probably knew.) Never quite sure why no one seems to use this... Not sure if DL DVD-RAM is yet/will ever be available... _________________ http://www.alexoria.co.uk • Find New Business for Your Business |

Same here, i always use it, its a suprise on how you can come to rely on DVD-RAM for portability of large files without the need to burn/finalise a disk. _________________ Paul M |

Alternatively, just use a USB flash drive or two, and you don't have to worry about DVD drives or burning software, or carting a 5.25" disc around. _________________ Peter Boughton |

Different media gives the same problem, so it looks like my drive needs replacing, it also appears that the manufacturer no longer has a web site that works any more.
That will teach me to buy a £50 drive from PC World and not test all the features.
I intend to go with a better brand next time, LG or Phillips. |

My recommendation would be for a Lite On drive. Don't think I've ever heard anything bad about them, and I've got a Lite On SHW-1635s myself.
Not tested it's DL functionality yet (decided it wasn't cost effective), but it's done fine at everything else I've thrown at it. _________________ Peter Boughton |

| Bought a Liteon 18x drive from PCWorld at £29.99, strangely enough one of my other drives gave up today and started making coasters, so I would have had to replace a drive anyway. |
