Email SPAM!

Hi,

Not sure if anyone is experiancing the same problems but we are experiencing loads and loads of spam emails about penis erections, viagra etc...

We have about 5 email accounts setup and are all receiving these emails. Im not sure if this has something to do with the hosting account as I setup an account for my cousin who used to host with another company and he is also receiving these emails but he didnt before with his old hosting company. We have spam box enabled and that does not seem to be doing anything.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Adam,

Spam growth is continuing unabated. All we (users) can all do is try to lesson the damage. We (nethosted) automatically block tens of thousands of spam messages each day. As an end user you should enable SpamAssassin as well as local spam filtering if you have this available to you (depening on how you receive your mail). I can assure you you're not alone in receiving spam, and it's certainly not related to having an account with us.

Spam trends change, for example a year ago very few of us would have received spam mails with emedded images but these seem all the rage these days.

If this is still a problem after implementing what I've discussed one possible idea is to open a Google Mail account and having all your mail forward to there and get it forwarded back. A few people I know who were suffering from a deluge of spam (I'm talking 1000's of messages a day) due to having to have their domains receiving mail to all posssible addresses have used this technique with great success.

Thanks for the info. I have SpamAssassin enabled it just does not seem to be making a difference.

Its so frustrating! I would not mind if it was worth reading but is just utter rubbish!

You can configure SpamAssassin to make it more effective. Try lowering the score that gets messages moved to your spambox for example.

I have set up Spam Assassin and it does a pretty good job. It reduced spam from about 30 daily to about 2 or 3. However, the latest tactic is image based spam or Mail returned spam. This is a bit trickier to get rid of unless you are happy to accept no returned mail. I am thinking of deleting mail returns unless they come to an actual email account, rather than fgrh@domain.co.uk which is what usually happens. I'll let you know if it works.
