I'm trying to export tables using phpmyadmin. When I click Go either nothing happens at all or, after the usual Open/Save and browser dialogues the file starts to download and then I get the error message 'Internet Explorer cannot download [filename] from [server]. The connection with the server was reset.'

Probably my inexperience with this, but any ideas what's going wrong?

Which database are you trying to export? I'll take a look. Do you also have issues when trying to download database backups from the cPanel Backup tool?

I have just tried this on Pluto.

When I go into Export in Myadmin, select Save as File (everything else on default), and hit go, I get the server reset message. However, if I select some tables first (I used the "Select All" link), it works perfectly.

You can download Structure only without selecting any tables, but if Data is ticked in the SQL Options area, you have to tell it what data you want.
You would think it would produce a warning about this

Does seem like slightly stupid behaviour on phpMyAdmin's part, but on the other hand if the user specifically ticks data it makes sense that they should then select what data when presented with all their data. However, a small javascript reminder would be much friendlier than a reset connection message!!

It's ticked by default.

I've just tried it on my local copy of the database I looked at on Pluto, and it worked perfectly with the default settings. The SQL file contains all tables AND data.

All the default settings in there are the same, however I'm running Myadmin 2.6.4-pl3 on MySQL 4.1.19, and Pluto has Myadmin 2.9.0.2, MySQL 4.1.21.

I guess it's a bug in one or the other.

Sorry so long replying, other issues to deal with! Thanks for the replies.

OK, This is on celshare.org.uk. I just tried again. Two routes:

1. Select mdp, then Export, then md_user from database dump, check Save as File, Go, file started to donwload, then error message. This is what I was doing before, several times, and I'm certain I selected a table each time

2. Select db mdp, then table md_users, then selected all, then Export, checked save as file, and same problem.

Hmmm, I just went to phpMyAdmin on Saturn, selected your database, clicked export, ticket Save to File and Go and it downloaded a 1.6MB file without an error message. When I selected your table mdp_user it downloaded just that table again without error.

Can you get a full backup of this database via the cPanel backup tool?

And now I find that if I select all from the db dump it works, but if I select an individual table the download interrupts and I get the error message.

Checked again selecting a table (md_users), then tick all, then try to export. Failed.

Yes, no probs with cPanel backups or entire db export via phpMyAdmin. Am I doing (not doing) something I should?

I can't replicate this with two different browsers. If I select just one table, that table gets downloaded as I'd expect.

Bloody IE, it works in Firefox. I should know better by now and check every time. My apologies for wasting your time, and thanks for the help.

Yep, I get it too.

Then I did the same thing again, and it worked. And again, it failed.
And now I get Page cannot be displayed in the RH frame of myadmin.

And now it's working again

Instead of saving the file, I opened it in a text editor, not probs. Then I tried saving it again, with a different filename. Again, no probs.
However, I then tried to download with a name that had previously failed, and it failed.

I'm sure I've seen comment on this somewhere, something to do with windoze caching and temp files.

Try changing the "save as" file name, see what happens.

Welcome2, I've tried lots of variations using IE including changing file names. Only difference I foudn was that when exporting as sql it fails without any error message, with other types it fails at the fianl stage with an error message.

Testing now in Firefox it all works fine every time.

It could well be you've spotted a bug that the phpMyAdmin team will need to resolve (because lets face it, Microsoft will be unlikely to help here even if it is their fault). That or this is, as welcome2 suggests, a problem with IE caching the file in a corrupted state locally.
