I'm currently trying to upload e107 to my webspace using FlashFXP (www.flashfxp.com). I'm on a 1Mb ADSL connection. It'll manage to upload a few files with no problem, then get stuck on one file - the transfer speed slowly drops to zero and then it times out after a couple of minutes. Then it reconnects and repeats the process over again. The number of files it manages in one go is quite random - could be 8, could be 20, could be 115...

Here's what the log looks like when it happens (hangs on newthread.png).

Code:
[R] PASV
[R] 227 Entering Passive Mode (xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx)
[R] Opening data connection IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx PORT: xxx
[R] STOR new_small.png
[R] 150 Accepted data connection
[R] 226-File successfully transferred
[R] 226 0.062 seconds (measured here), 18.23 Kbytes per second
Transferred: new_small.png 1 KB in 0.22 seconds (5.1 KB/s)
[R] PASV
[R] 227 Entering Passive Mode (xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx)
[R] Opening data connection IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx PORT: xxx
[R] STOR newthread.png
[R] 150 Accepted data connection
[R] Connection lost: Great Dalby Primary School
Transferred 115 files totaling 165 KB in 3 minutes 50 seconds (5.4 KB/s)
[R] Attempting to Reconnect...

I've experienced the same problem with other hosts and other ftp clients aswell.

Any ideas what's going on here?

Thanks,

Richard

Do you have a firewall?

Andrew

Yes. I'm connected via a NetGear DG834GT Router with built in firewall and Windows Firewall in XP SP2 is enabled.

A firewall is the only reason I can see that could perhaps cause this behaviour, have you tried experimenting with various setups?

Andrew

I'll have a play about with things and let you know how I get on.

Thanks.

In my 5 years of using FlashFXP and conversing with the developers, it is almost always either NAT or a firewall getting in the way.

Hello again.

I disabled Windows Firewall and allowed all incoming in my router which seemed to fix the problem.

I'm not sure what specific firewall rule I should be using though. If I just enable incoming FTP (TCP:20,21) to my IP should that work? Or is there something else I should try?

Thanks.

Richard

Well FTP uses port 21 so if you allow all types of data to there you can then limit types and see which causes the issue.

Passive mode ftp requires no firewall to be in place. So you either need to use active mode ftp, or stop using firewalls.

My suggestion would be to stop using firewalls if you are on a NAT router. NAT makes them redundant.
