FTP problem with binary mode

I'm glad to hear that your sister had no issues, this does indicate an issue somewhere at your end either with your hardware or your ISP's.

With an old Dynamode modem/router I can download Test file 1 (54K .xls) but not Test file 2 (80K .doc)

With Netgear DG834G running firmware 3.0.1.25 I can download neither. There is since January a newer firmware 3.0.1.31 but no mention of improvements to FTP behaviour...

Test file 1 downloads fine on my sister's internet connection.

"Confused" barely begins to describe my state of mind!

I can see no reason for this behaviour either. I can download all the files via FTP without issue, your sister can also. The only thing in common where there is a fault is your ISP (as you've tried different computers, operating systems and modems/routers) yet other files of the same format work fine
