PS HTML form handling - textarea anyway - still very fragile judging by the amount of time and effort taken to enter this post! _________________ "I have made this letter long, only because I lacked the time to make it short." - Blaise Pascal 1657 |

Pete,
I've had a play with this and I'm impressed so far. I'm already a long term user of Webkit so the rendering speed is nothing new to me, but I'm interesting in seeing some JS benchmarks as I believe this is a completely new engine.
Certainly worth giving a try!

Yes, feels like FF3 without the clutter - which aiui is exactly what they are aiming for. If I was a Mozilla developer I might be a tad miffed, unless of course I thought there could be a job at google on the horizon.
I suspect the availability of good quality plugins will be critical for take up, but I don't think it will be long before people start writing them - if indeed they haven't already begun.

I've had a little go on this myself, from a speed and stability point of view it seems very nice!
I'd like to see a few more features to make it more customisable though, specifically I've always enjoyed being able to set my own shortcuts in Opera, and mouse gestures definitely wouldnt go amiss either. Looking forward to seeing where they take it, nice to have some more competition too, especially such strong competition, hopefully the others will raise their game!
Regards,

although it does make you wonder what they will do with all the extra information they gather via the browser?! _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |

Well the EULA is a generic one they use for all of their "services" and it's open source, so I doubt they're going to be doing much data collection. If they have tried to, those parts will soon be cut out and everyone will use the new "spyware free" fork.

but does it mean they will stop? Something very unsavoury about Google at times. With their own browser won't they be able to monitor and store your movements even more? _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |

No as it's open source. Any components that tried to do that will simply be removed by people and the version free of the "naughty bits" will become the default. For example there is IceWeasel (a version of FireFox) available due to trademark issues between Mozilla and Debian.

ok. Probably still won't touch it
just reading on the BBC website that they changed the wording because they had just used some wording for other products ....and the implication they overlooked it. Who are they trying to kid! _________________ Getting the hang of it slowly (subject to comment) |

I like it. I think my favourite things about it are the way it looks, the responsiveness of the, um... "chrome"/user interface (I could spend too long just messing about moving tabs around & pressing Ctrl-B etc...) and the fact that the tabs enclose the toolbars - I think it makes sense for each tab to have its own location bar because each tab has its own location
I don't think it will replace Firefox for me. I can see myself using it every now and then as a second browser but that might have something to do with its "Incognito Browsing" mode |
