Reading the numerous reports I saw that a data centre and internet hosting company was sited next to the oil depot. It doesn't sound very wise to me and the servers have been destroyed. Surely other hosts have their systems in far more secure locations? And you have to ask, if you were a major player looking for a hosting service would you choose a building next to millions of gallons of fuel?

Stand up the Labour Party ..... www.labour.org.uk

It says so much to me !

I think you can reasonably assume that things like oil refineries wont blow up destroying your data centre. Something like this hasn't happened since wartime europe remember! There is nothing to stop a plane flying into our data centre either we just all really hope it doesn't happen.

err, oil refinery incidents have happened before and in recent years. The WW2 issue is that its the biggest explosion/fire since then.

My point was if you are going to put a data centre anywhere, and buy their services, don't put it next to a potential hazard. I'd rather go with the risk of a plane crash than having data sited next to millions of gallons of fuel.

We had a refinery problem at the Conoco plant in Immingham when I was living in Hull. You could see the smoke from accross the Humber but there was no damage done outside of the plant. Not on the same scale mindyou. I think this was a lot of bad luck and probably some bad planning. To be fair, the internet hosting company probably had the right to think that their building wouldn't be destroyed but I'm not sure it would have been my first choice of location.

I suppose it does have its advantages when your working out the refueling contract for the backup generator!

When we were looking to buy our last house, the agent was showing us around the garden and we discovered our next door neighbour filling his fish pond from our outside tap! Funnily enough, we turned the outside tap off at the stop cock if we went away for more than 1 night.
