Of course it is.

It's a nice size and weight, good screen, Android's interface is usable, and it works.

It's not perfect though, here are some of the down sides:
- Battery life is very poor (looks like it'll be charged overnight every 1-2 days)
- The music/video speaker is on the back of the device.
- The buttons on the front are just a bit too flat.

I've written a blog post on the G1 with some of my initial thoughts , and I'll update that entry tomorrow or Monday after having used it some more.

Yikes.

How do I tell what version I've got?
My "Baseband version" has "29" on the end, my "Kernel version" has a "27" near the end, and my "Build number" contains "RC7" - all of which are earlier than "RC30".

Gah! It is the RC7!

I found the followingfor how to manually check for an upgrade:
Quote:
http://androidcommunity.com/google-sending-out-update-rc30-to-stop-root-access-20081107/

1) use Any Cut to create a new Shortcut on your desktop
2) pick Activity
3) pick Device Info
4) Tap on the new icon, scroll to the bottom and select Check for upgrade
5) Phone will automatically download & install RC30

However it appears for some reason that UK devices are stuck on RC7.

Found another page specifically about this that says:
"we should expect an update around the 12th-14th of November."

For T-Mobile UK customers, claiming they're still testing for the UK... not sure what testing they need to do... did they not test the US version? :S

Oooh, I found the source of that quote, along with details of how to hack the US version onto the device, plus a Google representative who didn't recommend doing that, but hasn't opposed it either.
http://groups.google.com/group/google-mobile-on-android-devices/browse_thread/thread/cd396fc916c33442

A little bit more optimistic now... a few days and I should be sorted.
