Yeah, I was just checking them out.

The £15 reseller account looks quite tempting. The dedicated servers look even more tempting

I'm looking to start some large projects, and i would do them on the dedicated server at work (i'm the only person who uses it and its only got 2 small sites on it!), but the prices for data transfer are insane.

But then again, I doubt i can afford £100/mo unless I get this new job.

You are the devil, trying to tempt me like this!

Oooh we have a smilie for that: been waiting to use that one for an age!!

So none of these projects you have in mind will generate any money? You couldn't put ads on any of the sites - that could help towards any dedicated costs

Andrew

Hopefully they'll be major money makers, but I dont think I have enough faith in myself to risk it.

Would I get root access on a dedicated server?

I've been inspired by what's happened here..

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww%2Eask%2Eco%2Euk

One search engine being indexed by another search engine because of the way that ask.co.uk links directly to search results ("related searches").

Well, i've written some software which has created a HUGE database for me (looking at around 1,000,000 keywords when it's finished), with full relational links going between each keyword.

I was thinking of mixing this in with nutch, the open source search engine.

So, if someone searched for "car leasing", it'd list the relevant results for car leasing, along with a list of "relevant searches" down the left.

No only will it be good to be able to give users other ideas on what to search for, but it'll get majorly indexed by the majority of search engines, meaning it'll receive a good number of hits.

When you've got so many hits coming in, it's easy enough to make money out of them.

BUT. it's hard to judge exactly how much money, and it feels like it's quite a big risk.

i might test it locally for a while to see exactly how good I can make the system before deciding

Josh is fascinated by search technologies, I'm sure he'll read of your project with great interest! I also find it very interesting - are you aware of any other service that performs something similar to you? Is nutch good enough for your needs or are you thinking of writing something yourself?

Yes you get full and unrestricted root access to the server.

Do you have a domain in mind?

Andrew

I've been working very close with search engines for quite a while now, delving into the unknown, working out how to trick them, and tempt them.

They're a very good platform for making money. I've got some "unethical" things going on with them (against general SEO guidelines), which make me a few quid a day, but I really want to make some megabucks out of them.

I know ask.co.uk do something similar. It will be the same kind of idea in listing relevant search phrases along with the results. But I'll be listing a lot more relevant searches (meaning more pages listed on other search engines), and that'll hopefully bump up my traffic.
Then if/when I get a decent amount of traffic I can start investing in a hell of a lot of other ideas I have in mind.

I think nutch is good enough. I'm not able to test it out until I can get Tomcat installed on a server (i might have to knock up a PC for testing linux stuff), but to be honest, it'll have to be good enough. My software development skills arent good enough to develop something like that.

The good think about nutch is that it's open source, so even though there will be vunerabilites, it'll be improved all the time by the developers working on it.

Actually, saying that - I'll have to read up on the licence for it to check i'm allowed to make money from it!

As for the domain, I havent a clue. I'm sure it'll take me months to think of something catchy enough!

SEO is somewhere we need to majorily improve actually, we rank poorly for the key phrases we would like to rank highly for ()

While we don't want to get banned by Google/Yahoo we're not adverse to trying some less than "orthodox" methods.

I'm just taking a look at nutch, I'd not heard of it before.

I think you are allowed to make money otherwise we'd be in a lot of trouble using Linux etc on our servers!!

I do remember visiting your domain and you had a strange word up and nothing else, seemed as though you were testing out search engines? How quickly they index these things or something?

Andrew

I've got quite a lot of silly things going on with search engines at the moment :|

the majority are experiements to see what can/cant be done, search engine activity..etc.. I've set up a couple of "mega sites". The sites dont really exist, but it appears to the search engines that they do. This is REALLY handy for seeing what works and what doesnt work with SEO becuase one small change gets mirrored across the whole site and you can easily see if the traffic goes up or down.
And i try to make a bit of money out of it in the meantime becuase i dont like wasting potential pennies

All sounds very interesting! Mega-sites that don't exist but do to search engines

Unfortunatly, nethosted's biggest downfall is the lack of text on the front page.

One way you can improve the traffic though is to maybe build a nice knowledge base, as comprehensive as possible. this would drive quite a few people in looking for answers to their problems, and get developers/designers/webmasters knowing about you.

Yeah I realise the frontpage is keyword bare, we tried to make up for it with the sub pages but it doesn't appear to have worked.

I actually hacked these forums, they bring us plenty of traffic but not many, if any, are potential clients as the thread titles aren't phrases like "multiple domain hosting".

We have three phrases we'd like to rank highly for:

"multiple domain hosting"
"reseller hosting" <-- unlikely now
"uk dedicated servers"

At the end of the day there's no magic tricks we can do we just need more quality backlinks.

Andrew

There might not be any magical tricks, but there's definately some ways to improve it slightly.

For example, the page i'm currently on has the page title "community", which doesnt do much good to you. I wonder if it'd effect users much if you changed the thread title to a random keyword to do with web hosting? if you could somehow place that keyword onto the page once or twice, you're already looking quite attractive to good. (google only looks for a keyword density of about 1% - 1.5%).

But yeah, the best way would to get backlinks with the required keyword in the anchor text.

so a whole load of these:

multiple domain hosting

would go down a treat.

also check out services like www.nichebot.com and look at the "ratio" column for the keyword you searched for. the lower the ratio the better the keyword will be to use.
