Hi,
I have been getting this error for a couple of days and hope it would either go away, or that I would find the cause myself, but I'm still receiving it and cannot work out why. It seems to happen only when I up/download quite a few files at a time.

Quote:
[20061007 18:31:36] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

When it occurs, the transfer fails and the connection is lost.

I have increased the timeout on my client from 40s to 60s.
I've chekced my firewall settings and my router settings - both seem to be configured correctly to allow my ftp client (smartftp) and my server IP (85.13.238.2 - Saturn).

Can anyone help with this error please?
Thank you.

Are you making too many simultaneous connections to the FTP server? In which case some will be blocked.

What I mean is that your client could be trying to make too many simultaneous connections to our FTP server... (in an effort to download multiple files quickly...).

Ah, I see.
Wonder where I can lower that level then.
I'll look.
Thank you Andrew.

Hi,

I have previously experienced this on other cPanel hosts and really do believe that this is cPanels doing.

Because on a very old host, the FTP would give that error every now and again, and requests to the http side of the site would also time out. usually access was allowed again within another minute. during this apparent time of downtime, the server still responded to pings.

This has happened to EVERY cPanel host me and my friends have been with, it happens here at nethosted as well, but not for eveyone at the same time. for example while it appears to be timing out for me, everything is still working fine for other people all accross the world (FTP, http and every other service) as I have confirmed myself numerous times while using VoIP to my friends in other countries.

So in my opinion this is cPanels doing, Although I may be cursed

Just my 2pence.

Ben,

This is because you've tried to connect too many times your IP address gets temporarily banned...

For the record the magic number is 8, any more simultaneous connections from the same IP and you will get blocked from making more.

Ahh, now if only I knew that, but what I don't understand is how I've been making 8 or more simultaneous connections and my FTP client does not use multiple connections.

Oh well, thanks for the enlightenment anyway Andrew

Thanks

No idea I'm afraid. You should also enable passive transfers if you can in your FTP client.

Yes, I had it set to Passive, but was getting the errors, so was just trying Port access. Will return it to Passive now and persevere.

Thank you again.

Hi,

It's not impossible that our firewall system has a bug in it, it is supposed to inspect packets and allow PASV requests without us having to open up a huge number of ports. But if you are having this problem through the dedicated FTP ports (21/20) then we can rule this out.
