Hi,

I am a little worried about spamming the search engines with my meta tag keywords, so below you will see I am using cars as a demonstration of some keywords that will be used in the keyword meta tag string and I would like to know if this would be classed as spamming the search engines as the word cars is said a lot ?

cars, bmw cars, alfa romeo cars, audi cars, ford cars, mercedes cars, saab cars, toyota cars, volkswagen cars, peugeot cars, renault cars, porsche cars

I know some people say some search engines read them, but I would like them there for the ones that do read them.

It's quite hard to answer this question as really no one knows what the big search engines would deem as meta tag spam if they even look for this at all.

I found this information useful when looking into that kind of thing:

http://selfpromotion.com/search-engine-optimization.t

He recommends not repeating an individual word more than five times. I don't think the site has been updated for a few years though.

Spam is basically unwanted repetition.

Adding "cars" after car brands could easily be considered unwanted repeition, and... well it's entirely pointless.
If I wanted to buy a certain car/brand, I'd search for that car name (eg: "ford focus", "bmw five series", etc), or just the company name, and not "ford cars" or "bmw cars".

Also, the point of keywords is to identify the most important words in the current page, not simply what you want the website to be found for.
For example, if your main page has a summary of car brands, then listing "cars, bmw, alfa romeo,audi,ford..." etc is fine.
But if you have individual pages for each of those brands, you need to change the keywords for those pages appropriately:
"audi,a5,q7,r8,tt,vorsprung,durch,technik" for the audi-focused section, or
"bmw,x3,z4,m5,mini,cooper,adventure" for a bmw-based one, etc.

In summary:
It's not about trying to guess how search engines might work; just do things correctly and accurately and trust the engines to do what they're designed to do.

I believe Google look for words in the main text of your page and ignore any meta-tags. If your company name or important information is repeated several times, it tends to get noticed more. However, some people have used white text with a tiny font to add more keywords without the user spotting. This tends to get you dropped from Google in a hurry ( I think BMW got found doing something similar). A good bit of content writing should help.

Google ignores the Keywords Meta and has done since 2000. I managed top 10 placing 90% of the time and top 30 99% without anything in the keywords metatag on Google.

The title is very important and description holds a lot of weight.

Don't think KeyWord think KeyString, eg second hand car basingstoke uk

This means you have to second guess how people will search for your product and ensure these words appear both in the title, description and body (several times) close together, preferably sequential.

In order to get on the search engines fast & monitor the results post the URL on a well used forum like, erm, this one! This will get picked up quickly by MSN, usually a week, so you can see the result you're likely to get from Google, which will be between 1 week and the end of the Universe (or later).

It's my understanding that Google doesn't even rely on the content text that much (if at all?) for actual rankings, and is more concerned about the pages linking to you.
