I received the following today which I know to be a scam. The email came from the US, the email it came to was not one that would receive a valid enquiry, we don't sell microscopes and I've seen this sort of spam before.

My question is, how does this sort of scam work? How do they make money out of this?

Hello Sales,

How are you today ? This is Thomas and I would like to place an order with your store for 5pcs.of METALLURGICAL/TRINOCULAR MICROSCOPES.

Kindly quote me back for 5pcs. on any of the two listed above including VAT and immediate/express delivery charge to London here in the UK.

And please note that my preferred mode of payment is via my Master/Visa Credit Card Account Details, hope this is well accepted by you ?

I urgently await your timely response while wishing you a great weekend ahead.

Regards,
Thomas Holden

Well I've got to assume they use a stolen CC, you ship the goods because the card works only to get a chargeback later down the line. By then they have precision microscopes to sell on the black market.

I guess. Not sure how they would get around the fact that we only ship to the address on the card and we validate the address as part of the CC process. I would assume most companies that work via mail order are the same.

If they've stolen the card they've probably got details about its owner too, and could know if they're away on holiday/etc, so they simply sit outside the delivery address for the expected delivery time and intercept the courier.
