Magneto eCommerce looks a promising eCommerce solution although it's still in beta. Has anyone tried it?

I've looked at the requirements
http://www.magentocommerce.com/system-requirements
and it requires PHP5.2, which I take it isn't going to be installed on Saturn for a long while?

There is apparently a work around for servers with PHP4
http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/installing-magento-on-a-php4-server

Andrew, is it possible to do this on Saturn? Is it sensible?

I'd like to have a go at running Magneto, if only to see if it's all it's cracked up to be, but the requirements may scupper my interest.

Kev,

PHP5 will be coming soon, most likely after an upgrade to cPanel 11 (once considered stable by cPanel and us).

I see no reason why you couldn't attempt their work around.

Thanks,

Andrew

I haven't tried it but I am interested in finding out more about it. It would be good to hear what you think of it once you've got it installed.

Kev,

No need for their work around anymore as I have implemented a global version of it with our own binary:

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew
Just noticed that you've added the PHP5 testing function. I installed Magneto yesterday using their PHP5 method.
www.hedera.co.uk

At the moment I'm stuck and will have to read the instructions!
If you do a search for 'hedera', you'll see one product I've added. It didn't appear obvious how to proceed, but then I think all of the eCommerce software is a bit like that. It will have the look and style when finished, which is I guess what people will be most interested in.

Magneto might just wake the folks at osCommerce up, and get version 3 released - it's long overdue

Kev,

It looks good, I think that's a better default style than OsCommerce. I guess a lot depends on the backend as well.

Thanks,

Andrew

I know it's beta software, but I can't do anything with Magento apart from install it. I've spent most of yesterday working on it, but still can't fathom out whats going on.
Magneto appear to be trying to add every feature that they can think off, and it looks like it is going to be bloatware. It looks pretty and modern, which should tempt some people, but I can't see this being ready for a very long time
I'll keep you posted if there are any developments.
