I've created a new FTP account. Alas I'm unable to point this FTP account to a folder outside public_html e.g. under the site home directory. Is there a way of doing this?

Hi,

Not via cPanel, there might be a way to point this manually. What is the account and where should it point?

Thanks,

Andrew

I can do this now with Cpanel 11 which you've changed me to. I'll experiment to make sure it works okay.

Thanks.

I have another problem. I'm unable to make an uploaded folder read-only. I've tried both filezilla and cyberduck. What I've tried to do is set the folder permissions to 500, i.e. read/execute for the owner. Each time the write-permission is preserved. I can successfully remove the group-write and other-write permissions, but not the user-write permission.

What works is setting the permission on the folder using the file manager interface of cpanel11. I'd like to be able to do it with an ftp client though. Is this an ftp client problem (in which case which client can I use), or an ftp server problem (in which case is there some way of re-configuring the behaviour to allow unsetting of the user-write bit).

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This is due to a feature of pure-ftpd called, and I quote, "CustomerProof". I've turned this off now, it is designed to prevent common customer mistakes with chmodding. You may need to restart your FTP session and/or remove/recreate the directory to see the changes.

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks. I can set read-only permission on folders now.

I have a new problem!

FTP download of a small Word document over SKY adsl is slow and often stalls. Uploading is fine. FTP download of the same file over BE is fine! This is a weird problem. It seems like SKY are scanning FTP downloads and not coping with this particular Word document! I'll need to investigate further and try to isolate what it is about this file that causes a problem. Other Word documents work fine.

Thanks for your help.

No problem, hopefully you and sky can get to the bottom of that particular problem!

It's not a Sky problem. I've tried uploading and downloading the file successfully several times to fuzioned's servers via SKY and the past 15 minutes. Fuzioned runs a similar cpanel setup. I can download over http and neptune. I think it's an ftp server problem. You're ftp logs for jupiter might show something. I can't view them myself.

I've previously had problems accessing some MS Office documents by FTP, with what sounds like the same behaviour. I would find the download would stall near the end of the file, always at the same point. Sometimes everything would work, other times it would reliably "not work".

Let me know if you'd like me to test any of the files ovey my connection.

Thanks for your help, this issue seemed similar so the client was moved.

Thanks,

Andrew
