Honestly the simplest way would just be to ask them!

Andrew

Ah. Silly me.

I think I'll just drag them in from a separate, local Thunderbird account.

If your old host is us then that's no problem. If not then it might not be possible unless they are using maildir format to store mail.

I've since been looking around the old hosts user folder, and they have a 'mail' directory which contains a directory for each email account (.mailbox@domain_co_uk). This means they are using maildir, correct?

So if I simply change the domains nameservers to NetHosted, and copy the relevant directories to my new NetHosted account once the changes have propagated I think I should be okay...

Edit: the filenames of the messages contain the server name. E.g.:

Code:
1195462795.H476983P3059.mars.solardns.com

Does this mean copying the files from one server to another is not an option?

We had a client who had this dilemma previously and they ended up copying the new mail via IMAP, have you looked into this idea?

Andrew

You mean copying the mail to an unrelated, intermediary email account via an email client, changing nameservers and finally copying "back" to the new account via an email client? This is my other option at the moment.

Yes I believe this is what they did. It might be possible for me to code a quick shell script to convert the hostnames if this method fails.

Thanks,

Andrew

Okay; I'll proceed with using the client method and let you know if I can't do it, but I can't see why that shouldn't be fine. Thanks Andrew.

I can now report that both methods seem to work fine.

I neglected to ensure that certain messages were available locally to copy back in, so replaced the server name in the file names and copied them into the relevant folder. The difference is they're marked as unread.
