I have finally finished my rewrite to proper CSS & XHTML for www.penninevets.co.uk . There are a couple of tiny changes to make for IE with the top toolbar needing tweeking a little, but at least it all works. I just have to write the linked website for our exotic pet business now ( and try to get a few commissions from elsewhere) and I'll be done.

Woah very red indeed!

Looks clean, a good thing definitely, messy sites are

How's business doing these days for you?

Red is good as our building is painted red and it has been known locally as the red shop for the last few years. Red is also the colour of first aid & the Red Cross, so should be recognisable as healthcare.

Clean is definately good. Sites like Ebay & Amazon are just too busy and difficult to take in at once. Not all of my customers are net savvy.

As for business, January has been our busiest month so far and this should be a quiet time of the year. Roll on summer!

I think the red is a bit over-powering. The menu would be better as a click to drop down rater then automagically dropping down.

You might try a less string red shade

Other than that its nice to see a site the complies with so many standards

Rhinoian,

You have the 'Valid XHTML 1.1'" logo on your site, but clicking it (from your home page) leads to the validator saying "Failed validation, 11 errors".

If you want help fixing this I'd be happy to assist.

Richard

I agree there, I found it quite disconcerting moving my mouse pointer down the list and finding things kept moving around; maybe an arrow to the right of expandable links would be better (hovering over the arrow opens up the links, rather than hovering over the text as it is now).

Thanks for your comment. I haven't quite worked out how to do that with the menu to work in all browsers and be compliant but I think that is one thing that will change in my next work-around. I was having problems with getting it to work in IE6 so I do know that you are not using that particular piece of software

Personally I think Firefox and Safari are the ones to aim for, IE users can bite my bottom! MS don't feel it necessary to continue development of their browser for anything but Windows, so I don't feel it's necessary to test my websites in IE (it's impossible for me to test with it anyway as I only run unix and OSX).

The problem is over 85% of the people in the world still use IE6, 5.5 or 5. I don;t see the new IE7 making a huge inroad as it is likely only to be taken up by new purchasers of Vista. The rest of the world on XP or 98/95 will stick to an earlier (and still buggy) version. We will be left coding for the lowest common denominator for a while yet.

wine  has come a long way these days, you can probably test IE if you're using a flavour of Linux!

But I agree, for me Safari + Stand + Saft + xGestures is the way forwards. Amazingly snappy browser. I should make a video of it so people can see how fast it is...!

I do run a version of linux, Yellow Dog on the Mac, but to be honest I just can't be bothered with IE! It always seems to be the bane of every web developer's troubles anyway, I say drop support for it and spend the time more constructively.

I'll have a play around later if I get time!

Perhaps I can soon use OSX on my PC now that Apple are using Intel. I know the tool to use XP on a mac is officially supported, it wont be long until Steve Jobs starts selling OSX to us PC users.

Slightly different subject - but now I have MaxADSL and speeds are up at 5 - 6Mb/s range, I am finding that I am waiting for websites now rather than my connection.

Ian

PS Can you upgrade the new Intel based Macs the same way as we can a PC?
