We've transferred a client's domain for webhosting, but we want their existing provider to continue to host their email.

I have set up the MX record for the domain to "Remote Mail Exchanger"

I had previously set a single record with the destination to the IP address of the server, and this appeared to work for a while.

However now the client reports that they cannot log into their email via outlook and an MX lookup reports the MX record as:

mx-85-13-219-98.acornwealth.co.uk - 85.13.219.98

The original provider says that the lookup should be

mail.acornwealth.co.uk - 85.13.219.98

Should I set the MX record in cpanel to a destination of mail.acornwealth.co.uk?

Should I also set up a CNAME record to point mail.acornwealth.co.uk to 85.13.219.98?

Hi Pete,

MX records need to be hostnames not IP addresses, what is required in this case is the following:

Change the mail CNAME to an A record pointing to the correct IP address as follows:

mail IN A 85.13.219.98

Then you need to set the MX record to point at this mail A record:

acornwealth.co.uk. IN MX 0 mail.acornwealth.co.uk.

I have made both of these changes for you so this should now be working correctly, you can check this using the following tool: http://www.mxtoolbox.com/ in there simply enter your domain acornwealth.co.uk and you'll see it's now showing the correct MX record.

Regards,

Darryl

P.S. Just as a little addendum, MX records always point at hostnames, CNAME records always alias one hostname to another hostname and A records always point to IP's.
