Hi,

I have gone to openspf.org and am not sure what to put, if someone could help that be great

Quote:
Let's set up SPF records for:

zc1.co.uk

Quote:
zc1.co.uk's IP address is 85.13.238.130 (jupiter.solardns.com).
Does that server send mail from zc1.co.uk? (A) yes / no

Yes (I presume, as I send email via the server)

Quote:
This wizard found 2 names for the MX servers for zc1.co.uk: zc1.co.uk and jupiter.solardns.com. (A single machine may go by more than one hostname. All of them are shown.)
MX servers receive mail for zc1.co.uk.
Do they also send mail from zc1.co.uk? (MX) yes / no

Yes (I presume, as I send email via the server)

Quote:
Do you want to just approve any host whose name ends in zc1.co.uk? (Expensive, unreliable and not recommended) (PTR) yes / no

No (Is this Right)

Quote:
Do any other servers send mail from zc1.co.uk? (a:) regular hostnames

Do I leave this, as the only server that send mail is Jupiter ?

Quote:
You can describe them by giving "arguments" to the a:, mx:, ip4:, and ptr: mechanisms. mx: takes domain names and approves all the MX servers of these domains. To keep the wizard short we left out ptr:, but it works analogously. (mx:) domain names

Not sure what to put here

Quote:
IP networks can be entered using CIDR notation, eg. 192.0.2.0/24 (ip4:) IP addresses

Not sure what to put here

Quote:
Could mail from zc1.co.uk originate through servers belonging to some other domain?
If you send mail through your ISP's servers, and the ISP has published an SPF record, name the ISP here. (include:) example.com

Would I put jupiter.solardns.com ?

Quote:
Do the above lines describe all the hosts that send mail from zc1.co.uk? (~all) yes / no

I presume this is Yes, can someone confirm ?

For the things you are not sure what to put put nothing, and yes you do leave that as Jupiter is the only server you send via. The last question is also Yes.

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi,

Would I be able to make this into a universal SPF record for all my accounts or for new accounts ?

I know I would need to edit the DNS Zone etc...

Absolutely! You can use it on all of your zones.

Thanks,

Andrew

so, if I've got it right. You set up an SPF record to tell the world where your mail should be sent from. When they receive a mail from your domain they then check the IP address they received in the mail header against the SPF record (wherever that is).

If they match the mail is sent normally, if not then the mail is just left in limbo somewhere (?! lol)

This is all good in theory but it relies on the sending SMTP server checking for a SPF record!

Thanks,

Andrew
