Andrew | Two problems really...
Primarily, I seem to come up with new ideas for projects faster than I can finish the old ones. I then move onto the new idea and forget about the old one.
And secondly... developing on my own is.. lonely it goes on for a long time without getting anything back out of it (I don't have much patience when it comes to the monotonous process of creating the same systems over and over again [e.g. log-in, registering, profiles, all that stuff that's on every dynamic site]). I find it a pretty demoralising process.

Surely your code is reusable?

In many cases, no.
Everytime I make a new site I learn new things, better way to do things. I literally can't allow myself do it the old way if I know of a better way. And I always learn better ways.
In other cases the different nature of the site means I can't reuse it, e.g. a gaming clan enlistment system compared to a e-commerce billing sign-up process. Due to the over-ambitious nature of my projects, they tend to vary greatly.
In the past I've started projects for an Open Source CMS, webforum, hosting billing software, massively multiplayer online browser games, media reviewing sites, MySQL management software.. the list goes on.
I should make my mind up |

I have actually managed to overcome myself and got stuck in with my projects (stopped switching over), and it's starting to turn up results.
My open source PHP CMS is starting to take shape: http://www.unplugged-cms.org (or the SourceForge page at http://sourceforge.net/unplugged-cms). I'm working on it with a friend of mine (he came up with the name! ), and he's managed to rope in one of his friends as well (although that guy hasn't made any contributions yet), so the project seems to be going quite well!
The CMS itself has quite an exhaustive feature list (of things we plan to implement, and are capable of doing so), but (since I somehow find myself de facto project leader) my aim is to keep it simple, without bloat, and yet easy to extend.
Anyhow, seems I've come a long way since Andrew explained to me what 'CMS' stood for, on these very forums!

Mike,
That's some project to get underway! Very impressive. Please please please make security a number one priority. The amount of problems caused on servers by content management systems is not small I can assure you. PHP-Nuke and Mambo being by far the worst offenders. Why not also offer some easy route for people to upgrade, even an automatic upgrade feature. People who don't know how to, or just don't upgrade also cause security headaches for us server admin types.
I'd love to see a workable demo and some screenshots on your site - although I realise it's early days in the project so I shouldn't expect too much too soon
I look forward to regular updates on this! As I said earlier, very impressive to be taking on such a project

Security is definitely a priority, and something that I lecture my team-mate about fairly often. Nevertheless, I'm sure a few will get through without me noticing. Fortunately, we're open source, and people can point out possible security flaws before they become a real problem.
I hope to update the site with actual information about the CMS as soon as I can, however at the moment there's no admin panel to speak of; admin is done through phpMyAdmin, so it may be prudent to do that first!
As for updating, I'd love to do automatic updates, but with the amount of varying server environments out there, and things such as cPanel which seem to be somewhat restrictive in what you can do (e.g., I'm fairly certain a standard set-up with cPanel would have some problems if a PHP app tried to download a new set of files from a remote server and then replace certain files with them! We will though, for certain, make it alert the admin quite clearly when there is an update available.
