Afternoon All.

The site isn't actually hosted here, it's elsewhere on our company network, however as i'm now a customer of NetHosted for oursourcing our email and website.

I've been working on a project for the past week or two, trying to design a simple uploader similar to ImageShack/PhotoBucket and the like.

Been through tears and joy with this project, as PHP coding can be tedious at times, and well I wanted your opinion on the overall finished website to see if I have got the simplistic approach right for both myself and end users.

Let me know what you guys think, it's only been back online for a day or so with the new scripting/style.

It looks good. I haven't tested the functionality. I would suggest making the diagonal lines that create the rectangle a bit stronger as on my screen at least they're not that visible.

What do links to images look like?

What sort of backend are you running this on?

I will see what I can do Andrew about the lines.

The links once uploaded appear in the format;

http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension

The linux time value is generally so unique to the second that it's the easiest to implement with the scripting.

The backend is a highly tweaked Apache/PHP4+5 setup.

If people were to use your site to host multiple images would it not be clearer to have the original image name somewhere in the link? If someone was trying to pick out an image they liked from a big list of image links it'd be better for your server load and for them if they could locate the correct image ASAP I would say? Just a suggestion!

Storage should be fun as this project grows eh! Apache also might be a bit heavy as things progress, perhaps lighttpd or similar would work best. I imagine even file system considerations would have to be taken into account! For example if you store all the photos from one day in one directory and there are 1000's of uploads a day the filesystem would certainly come into play. But of course I'm guessing on how the photos are stored.

At the moment this is simply a project but the environment which it's hosted within will be modified when the time comes.

We'd rather use the (linux time) value at the moment to keep the privacy factor there and to help combat duplicate images.

If and when the user base does pick up for Upload3r, which it did a month ago then we will react and expand the site onto it's own equipment, at the moment the side sports one advertisement banner, and that is only upon using the service to upload an image.

It's only a simple Google Ads banner, but it gives users the option of helping contribute to the service by clicking the banner which in turn generates us revenue for bandwidth/server costs.

Andrew.

I tried amending the background earlier but it makes the text hard to read, so i'm not going to follow through with that one, it looks fine on most computer screens.

Regarding finding the images easily amongst a flood of links, we have implemented a feature since my last post that allows, if a email address is provided, to allow them to enter an image description.

This description combined with the image link would then be emailed to the address provided. We already had parts of this implemented, the emailing of an image link was already in place, so just adding a description variable was fairly easy to do.

That wouldn't quite cover the situation I had in mind. For example if someone linked to 10 pictures of cars they liked on a forum, they would have ten links like this:

http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension
http://www.upload3r.com/serve/DDMMYY/linuxtimevalue.extension

if all the person could remember was that they liked the Ferrari it wouldn't be obvious from the links as to which one pointed to the picture of the Ferrari. Assuming the person has labeled their photos in a meaningful way I think it's a shame to lose any extra information that you might have.
